Differential oil change
A differential is found on every car. Sometimes it is at the rear, sometimes at the front. Some vehicles even have differentials at both ends. If the vehicle has a front differential combined with the gearbox, the rear differential will use a different type of oil.
Usually, when a vehicle has a front differential built into the gearbox, it requires a fully synthetic oil (such as SAE 75 to 85). As for the rear differential, it requires a thicker oil around SAE 90.
How often should rear differential oil be changed?
Most car manufacturers recommend changing the rear differential oil approximately every 50,000 to 80,000 km. The vehicle service manual contains the exact mileage and time when the rear differential oil should be changed.
Differential oil change should not be done by yourself — this work must be performed by professionals. The used oil must then be disposed of in the legally prescribed manner.
In addition, a new gasket should be installed and various housing parts must be cleaned of any contaminants that may still be there from the older oil. This way the contaminants will not mix with the new oil and cause problems.
How often should front differential oil be changed?
If you have a front differential combined with the gearbox, pay attention to the answer to this question. Front differential oil should be changed approximately every 40,000 to 50,000 km. Again, consult the user manual to confirm the exact mileage interval.
After draining the differential oil, it will be changed together with the gearbox oil. As with the rear differential, only an authorized mechanic should change the front differential oil.
